From January 1, 2009 the new EU regulation - the legal basis for all organic food and farming in Europe - is in place. To inform about the new regulation, what it brings about and what stakeholders think of it, the Ifoam EU Group has published a dossier on the new regulation that was presented in Biofach 2009 and should serve as a valuable document of reference for the organic as well as related sectors.

The main purpose of this project is to provide and exchange sensory information on organic food, not only to the industry (organic associations, producers, processors, retailers, wholesalers)but also to the public at large: the consumers.

Following a request from the European Commission the European Food Safety Authority
(EFSA) was asked to provide a scientific opinion on potential risks arising from nanoscience
and nanotechnologies on food and feed safety.

This Opinion deals with the recent developments in the risk assessment of nanomaterials for both man and the environment.

Few highlights on the EU organic sector

The organic sector amounts to an estimated 7.6 mio ha in 2008, i.e. 4.3% of EU-27

utilised agricultural area (UAA). In the period 2000-2008, the average annual rate

of growth was 6.7% in the EU-15 and 20.0% in the EU-12;

The area under organic agriculture is close to or higher than 9% of the total UAA

in five Member States: the Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Austria (15.5%) and
